It’s called Mountaintop Removal mining in West Virginia, but also known as strip mining or open pit mining - they are all forms of surface mining for coal that is incredibly detrimental to the land they are performed on, the environment around them, the health of workers and nearby residents and the vitality of local communities. It’s a real problem in the Appalachian Mountains, and is where most of the east coast gets its energy from. With Japan and Libya, the US market and dependence on coal for cheap power is only heightening.
